Hex Key (also known as Allen Key, Hexagon Key and Socket Key), sizes and its dimensions are
used to determine which size hex key is required for use with the applicable fastener depending
on the thread size of the fastener.
Most common used to install socket screws the dimensions of Allen keys can be used to check
the accessibility of your fastener were space is limited.
For example for an M8 socket cap screw requires at least 32+8(head size) = 40mm clearance
above the screw for easy accessibility.
The table below shows metric Allen key sizes and dimensions for corresponding socket cap
screws based on Din 912 standards on thread sizes M3-M24
RS PRO A2 Stainless Steel Hexagon Socket Head Screws, Metric Thread
The RS PRO hexagon head socket cap screws have a narrow head and are perfect for use in hard to reach areas. The fasteners areuseful in machine repair and maintenance and in many sectors.
As these socket cap screws are made from A2 (304) stainless stee, they are ideal for use in the food and beverage industry. A2 stainless steel provides good corrosion resistance and is more affordable than A4 (316) stainless steel.
The socket screws can be tightened or loosened using an Allen key or a hex key. They can have various tip point types which include:
• Cup point – concave tip, most commonly used
• Flat point – used for frequent resetting or relocating, simple and cost-effective
• Cone point – pointed tip, designed for a more permanent installation, highest holding capability due to the precise contact of the cone point
• Half Dog point – the tip is cylindrical
Features and Benefits
• Various thread sizes available, including M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 and M20
• Manufactured from A2 stainless steel
• Can be used instead of hex bolt when there is less clearance
• Socket Head Cap Screw – strongest of all head styles
• Head height is equal to shank diameter
Features and Benefits
Although uses may vary, as standard, these screws are fasteners for industrial equipment or machines which require parts to be fixed onto a surface or together. The socket will need to be the same metric thread as the screw itself. As an example, some of the types of uses would be:
• Fasteners and fixings
• Machine tooling and repair
• Security guarding
• Electronic applications
• Automotive industry
• Domestic applications
• Medical applications
• Facilities and maintenance applications
What is a socket screw?
Socket screws are a type of threaded bolt which screws into an appropriate socket, and are used to fasten various materials together. They are designed to be turned by hex keys or similar tools. Good quality and reliable RS PRO socket screws ensures the fixing will remain strong and stable in all kinds of applications, including industrial.
What are the benefits of stainless steel?
Stainless steel is useful for more than just a visual purpose. The main highlight would be the superior corrosion resistance, stopping unwanted issues like rusting. High heat resistance is also a big benefit, due to the way stainless steel is created, it can withstand an incredible amount of heat as opposed to a screw or socket made from standard steel. The only possible issue may be cost. However, a reliable and durable material will not only increase the longevity of the application, but also the sustainability.
